I learned recently that the Aztec's believed that cacao seeds were a gift from the god of wisdom. They were used as a form of currency and only prepared in drinks, often mixed with spices! Cacao in it's raw form is actually quite bitter, but I'm sweetening things up a bit. Thanks for the inspiration, ancient friends :)
This aztec drinking chocolate is rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of kick (you can always omit the cayenne if you're not fan of the heat, but it's pretty mild).

*CacAO powder is different than cocOA powder. While both are derived from the cacao bean, cacao powder is always unsweetened, less processed, and full of beneficial fats, fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. You can sub cocoa powder in this recipe, just ensure it is unsweetened!
**Coconut whip is very easy to make at home. Simply refrigerate a can of full fat coconut milk overnight. When ready to prepare, chill a medium bowl in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Remove solidified portion of coconut milk and place in the chilled bowl (save liquid portion for smoothies). Using a hand mixer, beat the coconut until stiff peaks begin to form, about 5-6 minutes. Add sweetener of choice, I usually use 2 TBSP maple syrup. You can also add additional flavors, like peppermint or vanilla extract. Beat again for 1 minute. Use for any whipped topping needs, store leftovers in the refrigerator for 2-3 days!
