Have you ever tried an acai bowl? If you live or have traveled to either coast, chances are you have. Here is the midwest, acai bowls are harder to come by! So why not make your own!
Acai is a type of berry grown in Brazil. It's known for it's antioxidant properties. In fact, when analyzed, acai berries have the highest antioxidant capacity of any food to date. Recent studies have shown it's immune boosting, cancer fighting, and anti-inflammatory effects! It's important to buy frozen, unsweetened acai berries. These are usually blended and packed in individual pouches. Supplements are poorly regulated and fresh berries have a very short shelf life so you won't find them in the states!
The flavor of an acai berry is similar to a blackberry or raspberry, with some chocolate notes in the aftertaste! Acai bowls are a refreshingly cold breakfast and are as filling as they are nutritious. You can top them with just about anything too! :)
