12 Days of Wellness: Day 11

Day 11: Booze

We've talked extensively about parties and food, but we should take time to mention alcohol as well. Here are a few tips to remember when your imbibing this weekend and through the new year:

Moderation. I know this seems obvious, but it can be as much of a challenge as the temptation to over-eat. A good rule of thumb is to avoid having more than 1 drink per hour, and no more than 3 drinks in an evening. Make sure you eat before you drink and stay hydrated with water!

Stop Early. It's a wise idea to trade in your booze for water a few hours before you plan to go to sleep. It's common to feel tired with alcohol intake, but even though you may fall asleep quickly, your sleep quality is not great. Sober up before you sleep.

Stick to beer + wine. Hard liquor is higher in alcohol concentration and it's easy to throw these back quickly. Beer and wine are lower in content (for the most part) and it can be more socially acceptable to drink these slowly. Wine and beer tasting parties can also be a great way to try different drinks in small portions. If you do choose a mixed drink or cocktail, go for one on the rocks -- the ice provides some needed dilution!

Peace and wellness, to you! Happy Holidays :)
